Where McCain Stands on Health Insurance Deregulation

By Ethan Calvin

Recently, Senator McCain has been receiving heat from an article he wrote for Contingencies magazine, which is not well known, reports the Washington Post.

In the article, Senator McCain wrote that he would like to deregulate the individual health insurance marketplace to bring in more competition.

McCain's health insurance reform plan wants to permit people to buy health plans across state lines, this way they will not be bound by in state regulations. The idea itself was not really the problem ,the timing was just wrong. A lot of the issues Wall Street is having can be partly blamed on the financial market's deregulation.

In the Contingencies magazine article, Senator McCain wrote: "Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation."

At first thought it may seem like McCain's plan is not so sound, because of the Wall Street crisis. At the same time, is it fair to compare Wall Street regulation with health insurance regulation? - 15224
