Are You in a Debt Emergency? Seek Debt Counseling

By Marlin Baccus

Are you constantly falling behind on bill payments? Do you constantly make just the minimum payment on your credit cards? Do you continuously feel on edge? If your replies are in the affirmative, then you surely need debt counseling. But before you seek the services of a debt counselor there are a few things that you need to do.

The first step is to admit that you have a problem. This will make you more likely to accept any advice that a counselor may give you. You next have to decide which agency suits your needs best. Although sometimes difficult, due to some of the questions you will have to respond to and the strict debt-repayment plan they will put you on, resolve yourself to cooperate fully with your counselor.

So, it is important that you feel comfortable with your debt counselors. Lastly, you must remember that getting out of a crisis should mean not getting into one again. This means that you must learn to spend within your means.

Once you sign up for a debt counseling program remember that it will reflect on your financial record and be seen as a negative factor during any future evaluation. This is only natural because a visit to a counselor means that you know how to take a loan but don't know how to pay it back.

On the flipside, it also shows that you are responsible. Instead of refusing to pay or simply declaring bankruptcy, you recognize that you have a problem and are willing to do what it takes to repay your debts. After some time has passed most lenders will be willing to once again extend you credit.

A debt counselor can help you in several ways. First of all, they examine your circumstances and formulate a plan. They are in direct contact with your lenders and attempt to obtain you lower interest rates and a longer term of payment. All of your debts are then consolidated into on easy payment to your counselor, who then forwards the money to each respective lender.

The services of a counselor are not free. While most charge the same amount, regardless of their effectiveness or training, they way they collect their fees may differ. Some require a payment right off the bat, while others include their cut into your monthly payment. Investigate carefully in order to make a wise choice in counselor.

If you feel that you're over your head in debt, don't wait. Seek the help of a counselor before it's too late. They may just be able to lend the helping hand that you so desperately need. - 15224
