U.S. Senator, Max Baucas, has been advocating a mandate for health insurance for the whole country for a long time. He recently showed a health care and insurance reform plan involving opening a national health insurance exchange. This will permit all Americans to buy health coverage.
Senator Baucus' plan is actually pretty similar to President-Elect Barack Obama's plan he proposed during the campaign. There is, however, one key difference between their plans - Senator Baucus would require all citizens to be covered.
A Reuters article states that members of Congress have given Baucas' plan a "quick and enthusiastic response." This is a good indicator that it could pass easily. At the same time, Congress mentions the economic crisis and federal budget deficit possible keeping any health reform plans.
They could be right. The budget deficit is currently in the trillions, while their are plans for bailouts for General Motors and Ford. There has also been talk about an economic stimulus package. In the near future it seems unrealistic for the government to pay for a universal health insurance program, but maybe later on.
Will this reform pass? We think not. At least not at the moment, but maybe in a year or so it is more realistic. - 15224
