What to look for in a Home Based Business

By Hayley Weatherburn

When thinking about whether or not you should do a Home Based Business, it is a good idea to keep this next statement in mind. By 2010, according to the U.S Department of Labor, "Self" will be the number one employer in the United States. I guess the most important question - would you rather be ahead of the times, or be the last one to know? As you may have already noticed, there are 1000s of home based businesses out there. Here are 5 guidelines to help find the Home Based Business that will be right for you:

1. Legitimate - I know this may seem like an obvious thing, but with the internet being almost limitless some of the home based businesses out there are actually a bit dodgy! So make sure you do your research. Find government websites that actually can confirm that the businesses are legitimate.

2. Goal Achievement - Before you start searching for a business, it is a very good idea to write down your life goals, and what kind of lifestyle you are looking to achieve. Once researching home based businesses it is very easy to get caught up in the hype of it all and forget what you have set out to achieve. Have a list of 3 or 4 main goals and check that your home based business of choice will allow you to achieve it in the timeframe you want.

3. Costs to start - Home based businesses generally speaking are relatively cheaper than say buying a franchise, however there are some out there that have hidden ongoing costs, KPI's that need to be kept up before making money each month and some that actually may need a reasonable amount of capital to begin. Keep your eye out, as there are home based businesses that only require a small start up fee and allow you to start profiting within a month.

4. Daily Method of Operation - So what do I mean here? Basically have a look at the actual things you will be doing on a daily basis to make money. Although it may be classed as a home based business, it still may need you to sit in the office from 9-5. If you are looking to spend time with the kids, those businesses won't suit you, find one that only needs a small amount of time in the actual office so you can have that quality time.

5. Passionate about your business - Most people that are successful don't find their job a chore as they are genuinely interested in the business or product. As home based businesses can pretty much be in any industry it is important to find one you are interested in and can learn to love. If you find you are convincing yourself about the business or product - move on. You will find one that you can become passionate about, even if it takes a bit of researching.

List these points down, and establish what you want in your dream home based business. Once you have got this - it should be easy to go through them until you find what you want. This will save you time, money and a whole lot of effort! Stay committed, determined to succeed and most importantly, remember to have fun - life is for living after all! - 15224
