Beginning on January 5, 2009, uninsured Florida residents wll be able to buy health insurance under the Cover Florida program. The bill that Governor Charlie Christ signed in May of 2008 offers a stripped down group of plans that are exempt from some state regulations.
The Governor stated that the lowered premiums offered by the plans and the expanded access for coverage to those who otherwise wouldn't have been insured, were his primary goals. The plans will likely limit the number of hospital stays and also will be exempt from regulations mandated by the state.
Christ has hailed the plan as addressing health care needs of children, of seniors, of unemployed to give them freedom and choices regarding their health. The average monthly premium under the plan is said to be $155 and it has been reported that there are six insurers who've signed on and who've compiled a portfolio of 25 different plans to fit different needs.
This is a positive step in the right direction for many, even though the deductibles in the plan will approach $3000 for a family plan. The plan is a step toward a focus on health care instead of sickness care.
The Cover Florida Health Care Program will be good news to over 3 million Floridians who otherwise would be unable to find insurance under any plan. Pre-existing conditions will not be a factor in who is accepted for coverage. All residents between 19 and 64 are eligible, providing they have not been covered by any insurance plan for the prior six month. - 15224
