Kids and Money: Keeping a Kiddie Budget

By Alix Montoya

The global economic crisis is bearing down on everyone. We're all feeling the crunch in our daily lives. Gas prices are going up and with it several other commodities that we just got used to taking for granted. All these problems all lead to a point where we, as citizens, should teach our children how to handle money responsibly.

It's important to keep everything organized especially in times like this. There's no way of being sure what the future might bring. Something as serious as an accident, or perhaps a large purchase may set you and your family back if you are not careful in spending. So keeping a budget is important so we don't lose track of our expenses.

You can teach your kids this importance by letting them handle a little amount of money by themselves. You have to make sure that they handle it as responsibly as an adult. You can also suggest some ways to make more money from it. Perhaps a business from their arts and crafts hobby. Having your kids learn the importance of money early on in life is a good way to be sure that they are responsible users of money in the future.

There are a lot of advantages that you can point out to your kids. For example you can say that having a budget helps you to save up for a trip to Disney Land. You have to simplify it for them by saying that saving up subsequently leads to good stuff in the future. Maybe you can suggest a few things that he or she might want to save up for, like a brand new gadget or a shopping trip.

You have to make sure as well that they see the disadvantages of spending all your money irresponsibly. Your kid needs to learn to start being responsible because you'll never know when you'll need some money in the future. Ask him to save up for college now, and you'll be surprised at how much this affects how he grows up to be a good and relevant citizen.

So let them learn the importance of money and how one should always be wise and responsible in using it. It's better to be ready because there is absolutely no way to be sure what the future holds for you and your family. - 15224
