What Your Kids Can Learn About Money

By Alix Montoya

These days, the importance of money is at an all time high. The economic crisis is readily looming just over the horizon if it hasn't already arrived yet. So it's very important that we are prepared for anything that it might bring along with it. And teaching our kids to appreciate money is one way to make the financial crisis a good family bonding experience.

You can teach your kids to save the allowance they receive and you will be surprised at how much this will teach them how to appreciate money. It teaches your kids the importance of saving up for another day and lets them spend their money on things that they, and you find are more important. In fact, you can also try and convince them to start saving up for college as early as they can.

Saving up money also lets them buy bigger things. Show your kids that if they save up their allowance, just even once a week, they would be able to buy things like the newest videogame or even something that they have been wanting to have for the longest time. This way they'll get to see the buying power money has and you can teach them how to shop like a smart consumer.

You have to teach your kids this advantage. If they get the opportunity to learn that their most awaited visit to Disney Land hinges on something that they can help do, like keeping a budget, they'll be more than glad to help you with this task. You can also point out that keeping one for themselves can also help them save up for something they might want to buy in the future.

You have to make sure as well that they see the disadvantages of spending all your money irresponsibly. Your kid needs to learn to start being responsible because you'll never know when you'll need some money in the future. Ask him to save up for college now, and you'll be surprised at how much this affects how he grows up to be a good and relevant citizen.

If your kids can learn all the good things that money brings, you can also teach them to become more responsible adults in the future. You should be careful never to overindulge as this might bring about a spending spree from your kids which, in light of the recent crises, you surely do not want happening. - 15224
