Could you start up an Online Business?

By Louise Collins

In our current economy many people are probably trying to come up with ideas to generate a little extra income for their households. And one of the ways that your can start up your own business is on the internet. Actually, it's a pretty good choice for a lot of reasons.

Businesses in the online world can take many shapes and sizes and they can be simple to run. There are drop shipping models available to build an ecommerce site that mean you'll never need to carry inventory and for many people that alone is a huge benefit. And don't forget that people don't need to live within driving distance to do business with you.

There are probably a lot of people who just can't picture themselves running an online business and I'm not sure if it's the online part of the equation of they just can't picture themselves running a business of any kind. If it's just that they can't see the internet part, that's too bad because other than not needing the same kind of money to start, the traits you need are pretty much the same.

The problem with a lot of people is that they don't see past the computer part of it and think that they need to become some hot shot programmer or web designer to get their business up and running. That used to be true, but it isn't anymore. There are programs out there that are easy to learn and just about anyone now could build and manage the technical part of their own site.

As far as computer skills, what I think you do need is experience with different pieces of software like Word, Excel maybe Power Point. If you can run them, you can run some of the shopping cart and ecommerce store software. I think you need to be comfortable on the internet and good at finding information. So what else to you need to be:

First and foremost you have to be willing to learn. Because you need to learn how to build your site, you'll need to learn how to promote your site and you'll need to acquire enough of the basic business skills to know when you're making or losing money.

Discipline and persistence are probably the two most valuable qualities. Even though there is nothing you need to learn that will likely prove to be an insurmountable obstacle, you might have to take a few runs at many things before you start to get it right. You also better accept that this is a lot of work. The frequent online claims that you can work from your computer for a hour a day and make mega bucks are scams. Be ready to give up the next six months of your life, especially if you already have a job.

So ask yourself - Are you a hard worker who won't give up when the going gets tough? Are you reasonably intelligent and willing to stretch your brain a bit. Are you something of a Jack-of-all-trades? Any maybe most of all, are you willing to take a risk? Honestly, your less intrepid friends will not hesitate to notice if you fail, although they might ignore you if you succeed. But if you're willing to go for it anyway, then maybe you can make it work. - 15224
