Michigan Health Insurance Basics

By Jeff Cline

Blue Shield Blue Cross of Michigan and group based HMO plans must be written as Guarantee issue plans only. All other carriers are not restricted in this way. Other Michigan health insurance carriers can be underwritten individually.

Not only is BCBS of MI required to base rates on a community rather then a individual, they must also not exclude a individual based on a medical condition. This makes it possible for many uninsurable people to get insurance. They must base their rates on a community rate as well.

Individual carriers are less restricted. They may use limitations and exclusions for medical conditions. They can benefit by using the 12 month pre existing exclusion they are allowed. They do not have to give credit for prior coverage like a Guarntee issue plan.

Individual health insurance base their rates on many factors. All of which they choose. These factors can change but are most often, current market, age groups, locations and type of plan.

There are options in Michigan for low income and struggling families and individuals as well. One for children is the MICild plan. If a child and the parent met the requirements set forth they can benefit from all the benfits. They are, but not limited to office visits, medications, surgeries, dental and mental health.

The Michigan Department of Human Services may determine you eligible for many other options. These other low income options are available through the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH).

If you are looking for information on all your health and health insurance needs visit the Michigan Department of Community Services website. They can help you find what fits you best. They also have information on providers and carriers in your area.

Michigan would like to lower the current 11.4% rate of uninsured individuals in the State. Not having the resources for help is a big reason for this rate. Michigan has worked very hard to make all this information available to the citizens of Michigan. You can research and find what health insurance option fits your needs or budget. - 15224
