Modified Auto Insurance: Things You Should Understand

By Chimezirim Odimba

For many, their most valued treasure is their vehicle and they love to spend time transforming it. While this is not quite the norm for most, many have found great enjoyment and have also spent a lot of money on this pastime. When this is the case, added insurance coverage is necessary in order to protect this type of vehicle from being jeopardized in case of an unfortunate event such as theft or an accident.

Anyone that modifies and improves their vehicle will pay a higher premium price. For some, it can be a struggle to find a car insurance company even willing to insure a modified or performance car. Although the cost for premiums will be considerably more pricey, most insurance companies are willing to cover exterior changes.

The problem lies mainly with engine modification. When it comes to engine modifications and cars with extremely powerful engines, a lot of companies will not even consider giving a quote. Standard insurance quotes are usually given to cars with modifications to the in-car entertainment system and with additional exterior objects.

Most insurance companies are pretty modification friendly as long as there are only minor changes. Young drivers will likely be unable to find coverage for their high-powered cars or those with engine modifications.

Modified street cars used to be nearly impossible to insure but changes have been made by the insurance companies to accommodate these drivers. Determining the insurance premiums for these types of vehicles is one factor that hasn't changed.

Calculating the amount of risk involved with the driver is decided upon by using gender, age, income, etc. As far as car insurance companies are concerned, there are two types of modified street cars: show cars and street race cars.

Barely driven and usually watched carefully, show cars pose no threat to insurance companies. Show cars are usually stored when not in use which makes them less prone to being ripped off. This is all excellent information for your insurance agent.

Street racers, on the other hand, involve levels of high risk regarding where, how, by whom, and when they are driven. Coverage for this kind of vehicle is extremely high to recoup any possible future losses. - 15224
